Guhyeshwari Temple: A Sacred Destination During Dashain in Nepal

Nepal, a land rich in cultural diversity and spiritual heritage, celebrates its most significant and grandest festival, Dashain. This auspicious occasion, steeped in traditions and rituals, holds a special place in the hearts of Nepalese people. One of the holiest sites to visit during Dashain is the Guhyeshwari Temple, which not only adds to the importance of this festival but also embodies a rich tapestry of legends and beliefs.

The Guhyeshwari Temple, nestled in the heart of Kathmandu, is dedicated to Guhyeshwari, the Adi Shakti. It is a revered Shakti Peetha, located just 1 kilometer east of the famous Pashupatinath Temple along the southern bank of the Bagmati River. According to Hindu beliefs, Guhyeshwari Temple also makes an essential pilgrimage destination for Tantric worshippers.

The temple’s significance is deeply intertwined with the legend of Sati and the concept of Shakti Peethas. When Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva, self-immolated in response to her father Daksha’s insult, Shiva, grief-stricken, wandered with her corpse. Guhyeshwari Temple is believed to be the spot where parts of her body fell. Specifically, it is said to mark the place where her hips or knees landed, depending on the version of the legend. The sacred site is a testament to the strength and importance of Shakti worship.

During Dashain, the Guhyeshwari Temple witnesses an influx of devotees seeking blessings, especially on the auspicious days of this festival. The goddess Guhyeshwari is revered with elaborate pujas and offerings, attracting Tantric practitioners who perform rites to gain the power of tantra. The temple becomes a vibrant hub of religious activities, and its significance is accentuated by the devout believers.

In addition to its Hindu significance, the temple holds a special place in the hearts of Newari Vajrayana Buddhists. They consider Guhyeshwari as sacred to Vajrayogini in the form of Vajravarahi and believe that it is the location of the mythical lotus upon which the revered Swayambhunath stupa rests. The temple’s natural spring, believed to be associated with Vajravarahi, is highly respected and plays a role in Buddhist practices.

Guhyeshwari Temple, with its rich history, spiritual importance, and connection to the grand festival of Dashain, stands as a symbol of Nepal’s religious and cultural diversity. During Dashain, the temple becomes a focal point of devotion and a source of strength for those seeking the blessings of the divine goddess. Whether as a Hindu pilgrimage site or a place of reverence for Vajrayana Buddhists, Guhyeshwari Temple remains a testament to the harmonious coexistence of faiths in Nepal and the power of devotion during this joyous festival.

Challenges and Hopes for Business and Trade during Dashain in Nepal

As the festive season of Dashain approached in Nepal this year, business and trade faced a unique set of challenges and opportunities. The country’s retailers and traders prepared for the busiest time of the year, but the outlook was not as hopeful as in the past. Economic slowdown, high bank interest rates, inflation, a weaker currency, reduced demand, and consumption of goods, along with decreased government capital spending, had all contributed to a less enthusiastic market.

Traders were particularly concerned about the increase in the price of goods and its impact on people’s spending capacity. Despite a gradual easing of import trade across the northern border, traders were bringing in fewer shipments from China compared to pre-Covid times. This had created uncertainty for businesses of all sizes, especially during a season that typically saw a surge in economic activities.

However, there were some glimmers of hope, particularly in the mobile and consumer electronics sector, where traders introduced festive themes and offers. The implementation of a mobile device management system was expected to boost sales. Additionally, the automobile sector, which faced import bans last year, was cautiously optimistic about a boost in business during Dashain.

Traders in Nepal were also exploring alternative strategies to revitalize the market during the festive season. They were diversifying their product offerings, introducing competitive pricing, and leveraging e-commerce platforms to reach a broader customer base. The hope was that these efforts would not only help overcome the economic challenges but also meet the evolving preferences of consumers, who were increasingly turning to online shopping for convenience and safety, especially during the pandemic. Despite the uncertainties, there was a determination among businesses to make the most of the Dashain season, finding ways to cater to the changing dynamics of consumer behavior and market conditions.

In a challenging economic climate, businesses looked to adapt and innovate to make last year’s Dashain season a success, despite the odds.

The Impact of Emotional Intelligence in Leadership

Leadership is not solely determined by intelligence or technical skills; it is deeply influenced by Emotional Intelligence (EQ). EQ is the ability to recognize, understand, manage and utilize emotions effectively.

Leaders who possess a high level of emotional intelligence gain a competitive advantage, EQ is pivotal for the following reasons:

  1. Emotions and performance: Emotional states significantly affect one’s performance. Negative emotional states can hinder cognitive abilities and talents. Emotions consume substantial mental resources, more than external distractions. Emotional intelligence enables leaders to navigate these internal challenges, maintaining their focus and cognitive abilities.
  2. Self-leadership: Gaining control over one’s emotions is the initial step. The emotional state of leaders can influence their teams. A negative leader can impact team morale and productivity, whereas an emotionally intelligent leader can foster a more productive and cheerful work environment.
  3. Emotional awareness: The goal is not to suppress emotions; instead it is about managing them. All individuals experience a range of emotions, including anger, frustration, sadness and joy. Emotional intelligence equips leaders to manage these emotions effectively, preventing them from taking control.

In the current workforce, the “Great Resignation” phenomenon highlights the importance of EQ. People are leaving their jobs, often due to poor leadership. They are unwilling to work for leaders who lack empathy, positivity and self-awareness. Intelligence alone does not suffice; leaders must possess EQ. Excelling in a specific field is insufficient if one cannot lead with emotional intelligence.

Daniel Goleman, author of the book “Emotional Intelligence” recommends three techniques to effectively manage emotions at work:

  1. Sympathetic nervous system arousal: This straightforward breathing technique involves deep inhalation, a prolonged pause, and slow exhalation. Repetition of this process can shift one’s physiological state and assist in overcoming distress.
  2. Acknowledging feelings: Verbally recognizing emotions can alter emotional energy, shifting it from the part of the brain that senses emotions to the part that regulates them.
  3. Mindfulness practice: Concentrate on your breath to remain present. This practice strengthens your ability to focus and reduce distractions.

On the contrary, when confronted with negative emotions, it is essential to step back and challenge extreme thoughts. Avoid allowing your mind to spiral into worst-case scenarios. Instead, it is essential to regain focus and seek a balanced perspective.
